OUR NEW ISSUE, HOME IS WHERE YOU ARE, IS HERE! Take a look →

Always sleep like you’re on vacation.

Reading up on Domino’s shopping guides is like having your own personal product concierge. We do the tedious part—deep-dive research, hands-on testing, and tapping experts for advice—so all you have to do is hit ‘add to cart.’ That’s why we call them Simply the Best.

Think about your favorite hotel stay—after a long flight and a day spent romping about a new city, we bet the first thing that comes to mind about the room isn’t the view from your window, the buzzy cool wallpaper pattern, or that trendy boucle arm chair. It’s jumping into that perfectly comfortable hotel bed.

But what makes a hotel bed so great, and sometimes even better than your own, anyways? It all starts with the mattress, says designer Natalia Miyar. “Selecting a mattress for use at a hotel can be a tricky business,” she adds, which is why she turns to trusted brands offering high quality materials; those you can count on holding up for a long time. That’s why we tapped  hoteliers and designers about the best queen mattresses they use in their projects, so you can bring that coveted comfort home.

Sleep trial: 120 nights | Mattress type: Hybrid | Warranty: Lifetime

Why we chose it: A cushiony pillowtop encases supportive coils and cooling layers of foam.

While everyone’s preferences when it comes to comfort is personal, designer Kate Rohrer of Rohe Creative keeps a few things in mind when selecting a hotel bed for perfect sleep. The most important thing in her books: the bed has to have coils. “I just can’t get behind the memory foam trend,” she admits. “Some mattress brands have perfected great hybrid versions that combine the best of coils and high density foam for durability.” One such option? The Bear Elite hybrid. She was blown away by its comfort (and targeted lumbar support). Pillow toppers are also a must to Rohrer (for that extra plush cush!) and the Bear delivers with its hand-quilted option complete with celliant fiber to promote cool, restorative z’s. “I think most guests enjoy an extra-cool sleep, so look for integrations like copper foam and celliant fiber that do the work for you.”

Why we chose it: Supportive enough for stomach and back sleepers, but a plush, quilted top keeps it soft enough for side sleepers.

Sereno Hotels in Lake Como and St. Barths leans on Beautyrest’s premium Black collection. And of all the different options available (C-Class, K-Class, L-Class, etc.), you can’t really go wrong with any pick for one of the best queen mattresses; each offers tailor-made support. “Hoteliers should never forget that at the most basic level, we are giving our guests a comfortable bed to sleep in,” stresses Luis Contreras, owner of  Sereno Hotels in Lake Como and St. Barths who worked with Patricia Urquiola on the design of their properties. “So, first and foremost, we select these mattresses with comfort top of mind,” he added.

Sleep trial: 45 nights  | Mattress type: Foam | Warranty: Lifetime

Why we chose it: The same bed you’ll find at Hoxton Hotels.

“For both homes and hotels, I prefer thick and fluffy mattresses that make you feel like you are sleeping on a cloud,” notes Miyar, who often turns to Naturalmat for only using natural fibers. “Their mattresses are made in Devon from locally sourced wool. As an added luxury, they use cashmere, lambswool and mohair to provide a truly heavenly sleep.” And while you may think these sorts of materials would warrant a warm sleep, they’re all actually inherently self-ventilating, and cashmere is by far the softest—just like your favorite sweater. The construction formula, according to the company, starts with a thin layer of coir, which is a fibrous material derived from coconuts (this, according to Naturalmat, is what gives it a springy strong core) that’s sandwiched between two, extra-thick layers of natural latex, which is then topped off with a blend of cashmere and lambswool. How fast can you say sweet dreams?

Why we chose it: Copper keeps night sweats at bay, it also prevents the growth of bacteria.

The single most important asset of a hotel, argues hotelier Damon Lawrence, the creator behind Stay Homage, is comfort. His favorite that fits the bill? The Corsicana Copper Foam mattress. At a neutral, medium-firm feel, this bed is distinguishable by its copper and gel-infused layers of foam that not only keep your body temperature regulated, but provide cushioned support. Its 12-inch height is made up of four total layers of foam including a firm, high-density one for base support. Complete with a custom-milled, zippered top, the cover is removable, for easy cleaning. Foam is often a great pick if motion transfer is a concern, since the material absorbs any disturbances. A good fit for all sleepers, this mattress is also compatible with a range of frames, including adjustable bases.

Let’s face it: The world of bedding is super-saturated and overwhelming—but sometimes you need a new mattress (or pillows, or sheets). At Domino, we strive to prioritize bedding brands that balance style, high-quality manufacturing, and eco-conscious attributes. Our editors and writers conduct hands-on testing when possible, but to find the best queen mattresses, we went to the experts—hoteliers and hospitality designers who know that a hotel room just isn’t complete without a versatile bed. Our list is based on their recommendations, products and brands they turn to when sourcing or testing products out for their own projects, keeping in mind that it has to suit a range of sleeping preferences (your visiting house guests will thank you).

A queen is bigger than a twin and full, but smaller than a king mattress, making it one of the most popular bed sizes available as it still allows enough comfortable room for (most) couples and even more if you’re sleeping solo. Dimensions are typically 60-by-80 inches, while this can always vary slightly by manufacturer, you shouldn’t have any issues pairing up one of the best queen mattresses with a bed frame the same size. The number that’s more important is the height of your mattress, which can vary widely. If you happen to go with something tall, say above 10 or 12 inches, you’re likely going to need queen-sized, deep pocket sheets.

There are a number of mattress types out there, but there are three we find to be most common. Innerspring mattresses are the most traditional and affordable, and known for their bounce factor (great for stomach sleepers who need extra support). Today’s modern memory foam mattresses also offer a host of benefits, including the ability to be shipped in a box. Some designs are infused with gel (to help regulate body temperature while offering ergonomic support) or offer open-cell structures for added breathability, and usually include multiple layers in different densities to avoid that quicksand feel. And last but not least, hybrid mattresses are a sandwich of springs and foam, offering the best of both worlds, including coils that promote better air flow. We almost always prefer natural materials, so if you want to avoid memory foam, there’s latex which is derived from rubber trees and can outlast all of these materials in terms of durability. It’s supportive and cushy, but also one of the best cooling mattresses you can get.

For these picks, we’ve done the research, but generally always read up on material details before you “add to cart”. “Mattress branding and technology, unfortunately, tends to be confusing, reveals Contreras. “Manufacturers license the brands and technology and the quality of the mattress varies with geographic location and time even when the brand stays the same. It is important to look at the technical specifications (gauge, spring count, density, etc.) and, of course, to test it when you can,” he shares.

More often than not, you can attribute the comfort of your mattress to its firmness level, typically defined as either soft, medium, or firm. But it’s all a bit subjective based on preference. In general, if you’re a side sleeper, you’ll likely prefer a softer, cushiony feel. Back sleepers and stomach sleepers tend to skew firmer; a back sleeper often enjoys a more neutral, medium-firm mattress, and stomach sleepers are often instructed to go for firm.

A quality mattress will likely last about a decade, though this number varies depending on a variety of factors, mainly the type you choose. In other words, foam and spring mattresses should support you for that 10-year period, whereas gel foam won’t (it’s more like 8 years), and hybrids you may be able to squeeze a couple more years out of. If longevity is really what you’re after, latex is the cream of the crop (or should we say rubber tree?) as it can last anywhere between 12 and 20 years.

As Naturepedic founder Barry Cik has told us before about how long a mattress can last, there are few warning signs that indicate your mattress is nearing the end of its life, most notably if you suddenly can’t get comfortable anymore, or are waking up with a stiff neck or sore back. Sagging is also a pretty sizable warning, if there are any spots in your mattress that are refusing to return to their original shape, it’s time to kickstart your shopping journey.

Accessorize. Whether it’s stacking pillows up high, or pairing an extra fluffy comforter with a lightweight coverlet or quilt. Stick to crisp, white sheets, made from cotton (percale, sateen, etc.), though linen isn’t a bad choice, either. Five-star sleep is a combination of a great mattress and the best pillows, though most hotels source a combination of down and feather: the Four Seasons, for instance, uses a blend of 25 percent down and 75 percent feather, as designers previously revealed to us when we asked them about hotel bedding secrets.

While there are some elusive queen-specific-sized pillows out there, this mattress size is pretty versatile; standard pillows fit perfectly, but you can sneak king-size pillows on there too if you want a fuller look.

Putting together a list of the best queen mattresses is daunting, especially when experts have told us time and time again that there is no universal indicator of a comfortable bed. This is one of the most popular sizes you can buy—not too big, not too small and it isn’t as much of a chore to move or set up—but you don’t have to spend hundreds a night to enjoy one.
